Does anyone have any advice on how to keep a mood journal.  I dont know how to keep one and my doc wanted me to start making one.  We got sidetracked and I forgot to ask specifics?

Phyliss,
I know it may seem silly to ask bit my mood fluctuates so much throughout the day I didn't know what to write, when or if they want why.  Thanks for the help.

i have about 10 little books that i pick up depending on the mood and i just note the date and time,,then i don't have to get to specific ..also i have a book with my to do and want to do stuff ,my psychologist had this plan that i only put one thing on one page so i don't look at too much at once, otherwise i start to crack..take one thing at a time..different coloured books for different moods, there's no wrong way some people even use charts and filing cabinets..post its...really whatever works for you ,strangley enough my doc gets impressed when i figure these things out for myself like i am so deranged it's a miracle,,i hate that..

Hey there,

I have just started to keep a mood chart over the last 6 weeks and it is actually quite helpful. I was able to share with my doc what was going on by showing her one piece of paper! It has also helped me to understand and become more aware of my moods. I'm sure different charts work for different people but I find this one includes everything I need it to include and I love it!

This is the link to the chart

Hope that helps!

Ashes,

You just write down how you feel. and everytime your mood changes, your write that down. Even it you are feeling manic at noon and then a 12:05 you are feeling depressed. This helps two fold. Tracking your mood will allow you to be able to understand your moods better and possibly recognize a cycle and triggers. And secondly, this allows the doc to get a better understanding of what is going on with you and can help the doc to better understand what type of treatment would benefit you most and perhaps medication.

I know it seems difficult, but it really isn't. Just write down what you are feeling from minute to minute or how ever rapidly your mood changes.

even if it is disorganized,it's good for me because when i am brave enough to go to do doctor,i am usually feeling ok,and so i always forget how i have been feeling,i once just brought my sketchbook to the doc and showed her the art i had done over the last month, and she could identify my moods from that,it was actually cool,i always date my work so that helped..i think i am going to knock myself out, sleeping tablets,i have to get up in the morning get kids off and then drive 3 hours to sydney to get my baby.scared.....

Thankyou for talking about mood journals everyone. I have never really kept one and am now trying to do so on moodtracker.com to try to identify patterns...
Dragonfly, that's good that you can express yourself through art like that and well done for dating them...

the only problem is when your too wired to bother doing it,sometimes i forget cos my brains going too fast, that when the art helps, cos i do that all the time naturally no matter what i feel like...it's like another language,,doodling is important..even if you think you can't draw...it's amazing what comes out from the sub conscience..

I have a moodtracker app on my ipod...but it doesn't let u record ur mood throughout the day...its a daily tracker. But i always forget about it. So right now my therapist has me journaling...which is great bc i love to write. When i can get my mind to settle down some i write good poetry. Sometimes i even find the way i speak is poetic...okay i'm babbling! lol

Hi smilingElephant,
"But i always forget about it."
I kept having the same problem.  I have given up for now.  I may try journaling.

Just try doing it whenever your mood changes. In the end it will help you. I'm gonna start one myself.

I have started doing moodtracker (the online application) and it is pretty helpful except I got busy and have missed a week. I am not too sure if I will remember how my moods changed. I think the best way of trying to keep track of moods is to set the same time aside to do it every day...now if I could only learn to do that myself!  Roll Eyes
