Ok so I have been on lithium for a week.  I drank over a gallon of water today and I'm still thirsty.  Its not hot today at all, I haven't been sweating, I didn't workout today.  Isn't that a lot?   Huh?

from what I understand, you drink quite a bit and are really thirsty while on Lithium. You have to make sure you keep hydrated too! So, keep drinking!!!

I ended up drinking a 1-1/2 gallons of water yesterday and last night.  It sucks, I wake up 4x per night to go to the bathroom and have to drink each time.  I'm tired from waking up so much. Sad  I have to drink bottled water, drinking that much tap water makes me sick...our water sucks here.

I'm telling ya its like you want the fire dept to open the hydrant so you have enough water ready. It sucks. I know what you are saying about getting up 4x  night to use the bathroom....you cant just shuffle in and be done... it wakes you up then just as you get back to sleep. its on again.

Oh and I hear ya about the bottled water. I have a filter on my faucet now. Its cheaper than the bottles...I just keep a few filled in the fridge Afro

Dreamline...In aliening, the body, the mind & the soul...one core belief is identifying the positive, in a negative experience...channeling the negative...to a positive. Example: Your excessive consumption of water... Negative: frequent urination...Positive: If you become exhausted when walking...you can void, in your shoes, & float, to your destination!

The good news is the Lithium seems to be working...I've been pretty mellow lately and no trouble sleeping...well at least not falling asleep. Roll Eyes

I read that taking 6-12 grams of inositol can cure the dehydration thing.  I didn't realize that you need that amount...I was only taking 500mg 3x per day.  I am increasing it gradually and will let you all know if it helps.

I don't remember if I mentioned also that good quality fish oil (like Carlson's) helps with the hand tremors.  I usually take it and ran out a while back.  I am going to see if that does anything too.

Dreamline if you take the inositol for the dehydration, how does the lithium go thru your body? I mean Im just looking at being hydrated or not,but also the transportation system to get it thru your body. I know I gotta go look it up... I was just thinking out loud thru my fingers as such...please forgive me

My understanding was that it helps your kidneys excrete the lithium without diluting the urine.  But then, maybe I assumed that's how it works...I don't remember.

http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/11535/abstract?CRETRY=1&SRETRY=0
"We designed a double-blind crossover study of 6 g/day oral inositol versus placebo, each given for 2 weeks, in seven patients. Inositol did not reverse lithium-induced polyuria, as measured by 24 h urine volume and urine specific gravity. However, subjects' subjective report of symptomatology was significantly improved on inositol as compared to placebo, possibly due to alleviation of polydipsia. "

I thought I'd hop in and comment here about Lithium, I've been on it for months now and never have I had any thist with it, I've actually had it the other way around.  I have to remind myself to drink as I was informed I had to keep my intake of fluids quite high during my time on it.  This could be the old paranioa kicking in as I'm not entirely stable at the moment but I'm convinced they aren't real tablets and some sort of placebo.  As I said though that is a little bit of the depression talking, what my real question is has anyone else had similar to me, the whole lack of thirst thing?

i never get thirsty either and have to push myself to remember to drink

Well that gives me some ammo to use against the whole 'sugar tablets' thing in my head right now, thanks NordicNicki Smiley

I don't get any of the side effects that are listed but I have had one thing that I'm wondering anyone else has suffered with.  I'm getting terrible patches of dry skin since starting them.  Its been a few months to build up but I've had dry patches around my nose and elbow for some strange reason.

some meds do cause skin dryness. I'm on Lamictal and it causes skin dryness. I usually scrub my face with an apricot facial scrub and then moisturize.  that may be too froofy for you, lol, so I'm sure just using some good soap and lotion or face cream will do the trick. If you ever need to look up side affects, just look up your medication online. I usually go straight to the manufacturers page, but there are also pages that just list the side affects; just google medication name side affects.
