im all for understanding and research into bipolar sufferes and wanting to help and be there as far as family and friends go...... but sometimes they can look into it too much and treat you like an invalid or an endangered species....its stiffling and sometimes just damn intrusive. my parents have just recently started to hit on the delusions and hypersexuality.......so now they think i am permanently living in a alternate reality and having sex with every male that moves....aaarrrrgggghhhhh! as if i would tell them anything about any of my personal encounters!
do any of you get this kind of attitude or interference?
so im mentally ill ....let me live with it

I do remember a time that you were upset bc they weren't involved with the knowledge of our illness and that they were in denial, so be happy that they are making headway, and then just address their responses by saying "Not all bipolars are the same or suffer the same types of effects".

Or if you look into it too much you might be doing yourself more harm than help

I don't believe that is so, Chase. I believe that the more info that you, your family, and friends have about the illness increases your progress and stability.

Actually, I have had exactly the same problem!!. My family treat me as if I can't carry out simle things on a daily basis, eg. my budget or food shop. They seem to think that I am constantly manic and that I am going to screw up again.

Here's a new one. My family have decided that after a few more months on my meds (just started them again), that I will be cured and won't have bp or need meds anymore. UH! I wish! Oh, and my grandma (who is like my mum to me) has suggested that I go and find a new pdoc again (I have done this 4 times for her) so that I can get a second opinion because apparently the next pdoc will 'hopefully' diagnose me with something else! What the fuck! After 4 pdocs, I think they have it right, yeah?

Kira, nows the time when you step back and remember this is their issue now, not yours. Your job is to focus on getting/staying well. Sometimes its hard for familys to accept a mental illness but thats not your problem if you keep on worrying about them you're going to stress yourself out more. I get the same from mine but now I just smile and nod at them when they go on about it but secretly Im not listening my brains playing a Homer Simpson cartoon!
